Along with the recent Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial, the Smithsonian will be adding a new branch of history by launching the $500 million National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The site will bring more diversity to the historical site that attracts lots of visits every year in Washington, DC.
New African American Museum
The NMAAHC is the Smithsonian’s 19th museum and the only national museum dedicated to telling the story of African American culture and history. It is slated to sit next to the Washington Monument.
The NMAAHC collection will combine almost 10,000 items from photographs, art, and manuscripts all drawn from the slave trade to the civil rights era to present day.
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will give remarks at the Smithsonian NMAAHC’s groundbreaking ceremony. The event will be invitation only, however it will be available on live stream at: http://nmaahc.si.edu/Events/Groundbreaking.
