Disturbing video surfaces of Ahmaud Arbery gunned down while jogging
A district attorney in Georgia has recommended the grand jury review the murder of Ahmaud Arbery after disturbing video has surfaced of the shooting
A district attorney in Georgia has recommended the grand jury review the murder of Ahmaud Arbery after disturbing video has surfaced of the shooting.
What the Ahmaud Arbery video shows
The horrifying cell phone recording shows a group of men chasing Arbery before they shoot him to death.
“I am of the opinion that the case should be presented to the grand jury of Glynn County for consideration of criminal charges against those involved in the death of Mr. Arbery,” Tom Durden, District Attorney Pro Temper for Brunswick Judicial Circuit wrote in a press release. The video begins with Arbery jogging in the Brunswick, GA neighborhood wearing a white T-shirt and shorts.
Ahmuad Arbery video shows confrontation
Seconds later, a struggle ensues. Arbery tries to wrestle a shotgun from Travis McMichael, who had pulled up next to Arbery. Travis got out of his vehicle armed with the weapon to confront him. Gregory McMichael, Travis’ father, watched from the back of a pickup truck.

The men fought over the gun until shots rang out. Arbery took a couple of steps before he dropped to the ground. Gregory told police that his son fired the fatal shots after Arbery “violently attacked” him, claims the video easily disproves.
Neither McMichael has been arrested or charged with the murder.
COVID pandemic affecting case
The murder occurred a few weeks before Georgia mandated stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down courts and stopped Arbery’s family from holding a protest in hopes of bringing more attention to his murder. “We thought about walking out where the shooting occurred, just doing a little march, but we can’t be out right now,” Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper, said at the time. Georgia’s courts remain closed until June 13. An “anonymous source” gave WGIG, a Brunswick radio station, the video of the murder, and the station published it on Tuesday.
Arbery Family demands justice
In light of the footage going viral, the Arbery’s family lawyer is again demanding the immediate arrest of the McMichaels. “Mr. Arbery had not committed any crime and there was no reason for these men to believe they had the right to stop him with weapons or to use deadly force in furtherance of their unlawful attempted stop. This is murder,” reads a statement from attorney S. Lee Merritt.
We cannot wait until a Grand Jury convenes to arrest these men. The Department of Justice must take over this case and bring all parties involved, including the officials that ratified these men’s behavior, up on federal hate crime charges. pic.twitter.com/TQUCTUgYM7— S.
