Milwaukee mourns fallen officer Kendall Corder after line-of-duty shooting

On June 26, Officer Corder, 32, and his partner, Officer Christopher McCray, 29, were responding to reports of gunfire near North 25th Street and West Garfield Avenue when they were ambushed.

The city of Milwaukee is in mourning following the tragic death of Officer Kendall Corder, a six-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a line-of-duty shooting.

Gunfire broke out on June 26 as Officer Corder, 32, and Officer Christopher McCray, 29, responded to a call near North 25th Street and West Garfield Avenue. The attackers ambushed them and shot both officers before either could return fire. Medical staff treated McCray for non‑life‑threatening injuries and later released him.

Medics transported Officer Corder to a local hospital in critical condition. He died Sunday evening.

Kendall Corder was a beloved officer

At a press conference, Police Chief Jeffrey Norman described Officer Corder as “someone who loved his career” and “looked forward to being part of the work to impact public safety in our community.”

Mayor Cavalier Johnson echoed the sentiment, stating, “He died doing what he loved—protecting and serving the people of Milwaukee”.

Suspect arrested

Police arrested a 22-year-old suspect without incident on Friday, June 27.

Authorities have not yet released his name or the charges pending against him.

GoFundMe to help honor officer Kendall Corder

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help raise funds to honor officer Corder.

Officials will etch Officer Corder’s name into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. during National Police Week. The honor recognizes officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. The tribute ensures his bravery and selflessness endure.

The GoFundMe is raising funds to help Officer Corder’s family and fellow officers attend the memorial in Washington, D.C.

A call for unity

The Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee Police Association have called for unity and support during this time of grief.

“We grieve for his family, friends, loved ones, his partner, and every member of his MPD family whose hearts are shattered by his loss,” the department said in a statement.

Corder is the sixth Milwaukee police officer shot and killed since 2018.
