16-year-old Irvington High School student Ziyad Cook was fatally shot on June 26.

Authorities in New Jersey are searching for the person(s) responsible for tragic shooting death of 16-year-old Ziyad Cook, a rising football star and honors student at Irvington High School.
Ziyad Cook shooting death investigation
Cook was fatally shot on the evening of June 26 near the 200 block of Brookdale Avenue in Newark’s West Ward. Another teenager, 17, was also injured and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, both teens were transported to University Hospital, where Cook was pronounced dead later that night. Authorities have not yet released details about the motive or any suspects, and the Homicide Task Force continues to investigate.
Ziyad Cook was a beloved student athlete
Cook, known for wearing jersey No. 33, was more than just a standout athlete. He was described by Irvington Schools Superintendent Dr. April Vauss as “an inspiring young man who embodied the spirit of the Irvington High School Blue Knights.” She added, “His talent and determination made him a leader among his peers, and he was admired not only for his athletic prowess but also for his kindness and compassion”.
On Monday, the community gathered at Irvington High School for a balloon release in Cook’s honor. Blue and white balloons—his school colors—filled the sky as classmates, teachers, and family members remembered a young man whose smile and spirit left a lasting impression.
“If you knew him, you loved him instantly,” said his mother, Ranessha Bell. “It doesn’t matter how much you try to protect your kids—sometimes, senseless violence still finds them”.
Investigation is ongoing
As the investigation continues, community leaders are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in on social media, with former teammates and coaches remembering Cook as a hardworking, humble, and gifted young man whose future was full of promise.
