He was attacked en route, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. He was a four-year veteran of the department.
Flattes, 56, worked at the federal detention center alongside his wife. His son-in-law also serves in the department as a sheriff’s deputy.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s name. The motive for the line of duty attack remains under investigation.
The sheriff’s office described the loss as “heartbreaking.” Flags at the detention center have been lowered to half-staff.
GoFundMe campaign created
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Flattes family.
Organized by Back The Blue NC, a nonprofit group, the fundraiser will help with funeral expenses and provide financial relief to Flattes family.
Organizers say 100% of the funds will go directly to his surviving family.
