Although the government has shutdown, Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Healthcare Act pushes forward as it become official today.
For the first time, millions of uninsured Americans will be able to enroll in affordable health care on healthcare.gov. The plans will not only help Americans, but people of color in need of health care. Uninsured minorities rates are two-three times higher than whites.
On government operated websites, lists will be available for health care products. Plans purchased on the exchanges will kick in on January 1, 2014 and sign up closes on March 31, 2014. The launch of healthcare exchanges will not be affected by a government shutdown.
Since many do not know exactly what the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) is, please read below to get a summary.
- Health insurance is now mandatory. This means, all Americans citizens and certain immigrants must sign up for health insurance. Failing to do so will result in an annual tax penalty up to $100.
- Where to go to enroll? Healthcare.gov will be the portal for you to use to determine which plan is best for you. Enter basic information such as age, state you live, and income in order to get the options available to you. Results will vary by state, and prices will vary depending on plans.
- For millions of Americans, coverage will actually be free or low costs.
