Danny Kelly Jr, a professional boxer from Maryland, was killed in front of his girlfriend and three kids in a possible road rage shooting on Christmas Eve, according to police.
Boxer Danny Kelly Jr shot to death
The 30-year-old and his family were traveling to a holiday event when the suspect’s vehicle pulled up next to the Kelly family vehicle and opened fire, according to a statement by Prince George’s County Police.
“At this time, detectives are looking into whether this was possible road rage,” police said in a statement.
Responding officers found Kelly unconscious in the driver’s seat of his SUV with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
No one else in the SUV was injured according to the statement.
Detectives are working on identifying the suspect and the suspect vehicle.
“This is an absolutely heartbreaking loss for Mr. Kelly’s family and friends. He is not home with his loved ones today on Christmas who are now mourning his loss instead of celebrating the holiday. St. Barnabas Road is a heavily-travelled roadway. If any other drivers saw anything there on Christmas Eve or may have information that could help, please call us. You can stay anonymous. We are committed to providing answers to his family,” said Acting Major David Blazer of the Major Crimes Division.
Professional boxer
Kelly was from Clinton, Maryland, and was well known in the boxing ranks around the state.
According to BoxRec.com, he had a record of 10-3-1 on the professional circuit, including nine knockouts.
“He was a wonderful dad. He loved his babies. He loved his children,” Kelly’s godmother Bernadine Walker told WUSA9.
“We traveled all over the place watching him boxing. Only for him to knock his opponent out in thirty seconds … He just had that trigger in him. He had that drive to be a good boxer,” she added.
Prince George’s County Police are offering $25,000 to anyone who has information that leads to an arrest and an indictment.
If anyone has information on the shooting death of Danny Kelly, they are asked to please call detectives at 301-516-2512.
