Former Milwaukee police officer charged with reckless homicide in fatal shooting of Sylville Smith
The former Milwaukee police officer that shot and killed Syville Smith which sparked protests in the city has been charged with reckless homicide.
Prosecutors have charged former Milwaukee police officer Dominique Heaggan‑Brown with first‑degree reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of 23‑year‑old Sylville Smith, KTLA reported.
Body‑Camera Footage Shows Smith Unarmed
Prosecutors say body‑camera video shows Heaggan‑Brown firing a second, fatal shot after Smith threw his handgun into a nearby yard. The complaint states that footage from both officers confirmed Smith was unarmed when the second shot hit him.
Investigators say Smith initially carried a Glock .40‑caliber handgun with an extended magazine. However, video captured him tossing the weapon after the first shot.
Officer Dominique Heaggan‑Brown Previously Fired in Separate Case
Authorities fired Heaggan‑Brown earlier during an unrelated sexual assault investigation. He now faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
Shooting Led to Days of Unrest
The August shooting happened as Smith ran from a traffic stop. His death sparked days of protests and civil unrest across Milwaukee.
Family members described Smith as a caring father, loyal friend and well‑known dancer in the city’s hip‑hop community. They also said Heaggan‑Brown knew Smith before the encounter.
Calls for Accountability Continue
The charge marks a significant development for activists who continue to push for stronger accountability in police‑involved shootings, especially in Black and brown communities.
