Minnesota elects Black women to the senate
Democratic candidates Erin Maye Quade, Zaynab Mohamed, and Clare Oumou Verbeten won their races against Republican challengers.
Other “firsts”
Not only they are the first Black women, they also have a few other firsts.
Erin Maye Quade is the first out lesbian and Clare Oumou Verbeten is the first Black LGBTQ member in the state senate of Minnesota.
Mohamed, 25, is also the youngest woman elected to the state Senate.
The trio plans to create a caucus for Black women in the Senate after they’re sworn into office in January, Oumou Verbeten said at an October election event.
