Colley, a beloved teacher at Salem High School, was visiting family in Monroe, Ga. to celebrate Christmas before a planned family Disney trip. As she was pulling out the driveway of her parent’s home with her husband and children, her nephew shot her.

“We lost a great daughter, a great mother. We lost a great friend,” her father, Johnny Atkinson, told news station WSB-TV.

The family said they can not fathom why Sullivan would shoot his aunt and wonder if mental health is at play.

There were no arguments that led up to shooting, and Sullivan was close to his aunt, family said.

She was married to her childhood sweetheart, U.S. Army veteran Jermaul Colley, who was grazed by a bullet, but was not seriously hurt.

GoFundMe

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to benefit the Colley family during this difficult time.
