Autopsy of FAMU drum major reveals he had “major bleeding”
An autopsy conducted of Florida A&M University student and drum major who died last month showed he had extensive bleeding in his back and right shoulder.
An autopsy of Robert Champion, a Florida A&M University drum major who died last month, found extensive internal bleeding in his back and right shoulder. The findings intensified scrutiny of the school’s hazing culture and fueled renewed calls for the university president’s removal.
Robert Champion Autopsy: Medical Examiner Details Widespread Injuries
The full autopsy, released Wednesday, shows Champion suffered heavy bleeding beneath the skin and over the muscle in his back, upper chest and upper arm. He also had chest bruising, abrasions below his waist, crushed fat tissue, and vomit in his lungs.
Champion registered a 102‑degree temperature when first responders attempted to revive him, according to the report.
Death Ruled a Homicide
The state medical examiner’s office released a synopsis stating Champion’s death was a homicide. The autopsy concluded that internal bleeding from blunt‑force trauma caused shock, which ultimately led to his death.
Robert Champion Hazing Death Investigation Continues
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Champion’s death. The case has already prompted student dismissals and intensified public pressure on university leadership.
