#Every28Hours : L.A. police kill unarmed, mentally ill man
According to a report from KTLA, 25-year-old South Los Angeles man was killed by police Monday night.
Ezell Ford has become another victim of a fatal shooting by police.
In a recent article of mine, I sparked the conversation on #Every28Hours. A study conducted by the Malcolm X Grass movement in 2012, discovered every 28 hours a Black man is killed by police. Those grim statistics still resonate two years later.
While the nation is reeling over the recent killing of unarmed teen, Mike Brown, another report of a Black man killed by police has surfaced.
According to a report from KTLA, 25-year-old South Los Angeles native Ezell Ford was killed by police Monday night.
Ford was only blocks away from his home Monday evening when he was shot. Ford’s family told KTLA’s Ford had “special needs” and mental “complications.”
LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery described the incident as an “investigative stop:”
During that investigative stop, a struggle ensued between the officers and the suspect, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Family members told KTLA Ford was complying with officers’ request to surrender when he was shot three times. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery but later died from his injuries.
According to an LAPD news release obtained by KTLA, the shooting will be reviewed by the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners.
Ford’s mother told KTLA she was pushed to the ground by officers when she was trying to find out “what happened” to her son.
“My son was a good kid. He didn’t deserve to die the way he did.”
