Asbury Park High School Presents: Engineering
Our second-year students enrolled in our APHS Engineering Academy start the year by designing and then creating a model of a sports car by joining 4 pieces of wood together to give their project a realistic dimension.

The first-year engineering students in the APHS Engineering Academy start the course with a hands-on project designed to teach tool safety and the practical application of mathematics. The students design a fabricate a model of a ‘minion’ out of wood. The design constraints of the project require the students to design to a tolerance of 0.0625 inches for width, length and the radius of the head. Students learn to use saws, squares, drills and bench sanders to create their projects.
Mr. Kevin Gould, engineering teacher, shared the following: Minions

Car models

Our second-year students enrolled in our APHS Engineering Academy start the year by designing and then creating a model of a sports car by joining 4 pieces of wood together to give their project a realistic dimension. After designing the profile of their vehicle, the students use a combination of hand and power tools to fabricate their model. In addition to the aesthetic design, students also consider the aerodynamics of the design. Students will personalize their “dream car” with several coats of a sprayed-on finish plus a dear coat. Racing wheels and tires are fabricated on our classroom 3D-printers, and LED lights are then added for head lights and taillights. As aspiring drivers, our students approach this project with plenty of enthusiasm.
