Texas mother mourns 5‑year‑old daughter killed in apparent road rage shooting 

A Houston mother is mourning her 5‑year‑old daughter Zah’Layah Walton who was killed after gunfire struck the family’s car in what authorities describe as an apparent road rage shooting. Zah’Layah was riding with her mother and siblings on Grant Road in northwest Harris County on Saturday, Sept. 19 when another driver opened fire, according to ABC13.

Monica Hicks said she heard what sounded like wind rushing past her before the rear window shattered. She told reporters she did not realize her daughter had been shot until she stopped the car and saw Zah’Layah unresponsive.

Zah’Layah was taken to a nearby hospital where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities arrested 47‑year‑old Jeremy Porter in connection with the shooting. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with capital murder, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Investigators used automated license plate reader technology to identify the suspect’s vehicle.

Authorities Say Family Was Not the Intended Target

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from mistaken identity. Porter allegedly fired five shots at the family’s car after misidentifying it as a vehicle involved in an earlier confrontation, according to ABC13. Hicks said she had no interaction with the shooter before the attack.

Mother Recalls Final Moments With Her Daughter Zah’Layah

During a vigil for Zah’Layah, Hicks said her beloved daughter had asked for a Hot Pocket when they got home. “The last thing I said was, ‘Yes,’” she told reporters. She described her daughter as loving, joyful and affectionate who simply didn’t deserve what happened to her.

“I ask God, why did he take my baby instead of me?” Hicks said. “I wouldn’t wish this pain on anybody.”

A GoFundMe has been organized to help the family during this time. The fundraiser supports funeral costs and ongoing care for Zah’Layah’s siblings, who suffered minor injuries from shattered glass.
