UMass Dartmouth running back Marvins Antoine, 18, fatally stabbed

UMass Dartmouth freshman running back Marvins Antoine, 18, was fatally stabbed early Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island, according to police and university officials. The stabbing happened around 12:30 a.m. in a Wendy’s parking lot after an altercation that began at the nearby Mezzo Lounge.

Providence police said Antoine suffered stab wounds to his chest and was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. A second UMass Dartmouth player, freshman defensive back Kensley Macean, 19, was also stabbed and sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries to his head and neck.

Altercation Began at Mezzo Lounge Before Moving Outside

Authorities reported that Antoine and several teammates had been at Mezzo Lounge before the fight moved into the Wendy’s parking lot. Police said the club appeared overcrowded, and staff stopped admitting patrons shortly before the confrontation escalated.

Investigators said both victims were found with stab wounds when officers arrived. Macean was treated at the hospital and later stabilized. Police noted that the incident involved multiple UMass Dartmouth students.

Suspect Arrested and Charged With Murder

A suspect, identified as Chukuwnonso Uzoma‑eze, 19, was arrested on campus and charged with murder in connection with Antoine’s death. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said investigators used Flock camera footage to identify the vehicle involved and locate the suspect.

Police said the suspect is a UMass Dartmouth student but not a member of the football team. They are still determining what led to the confrontation.

University Confirms Death and Offers Support

UMass Dartmouth confirmed Antoine’s death in a public statement, calling the loss “heartbreaking” and offering condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and teammates.

Antoine Remembered as Promising Student‑Athlete

Antoine was from Fall River, Massachusetts, and graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School. He had recently started his first season with the Division III Corsairs and had not yet appeared in a game. Coaches and former teammates described him as talented, motivated, and well‑liked.

The investigation remains active, and police have not released additional details about the motive.
