A newly released 292‑page forensic analysis of Nolan Wells’ cellphone shows how his friends privately reacted to his disappearance.
A newly released 292‑page forensic analysis report of Nolan Wells’ cellphone shows how his friends privately reacted to his disappearance, questioned each other and discussed what to say when investigators began asking questions.
Phone Messages Capture Confusion After Nolan Wells Vanished
The report, prepared by digital forensics firm Garrett Discovery, includes messages from 29 Snapchat group chats and private conversations. It documents how Wells’ friends tried to figure out his movements after he disappeared from Mississippi’s Horn Island during a July 4 gathering.
Friends first began discussing his absence around 12:45 a.m. on July 5. One participant said Wells had been socializing before leaving a boat with another person around 6 p.m. and walking toward a different vessel. Others questioned why he left his phone behind, noting that the behavior seemed unusual for him.
Friends Express Suspicion and Concern
As the hours passed, messages showed growing unease. One friend wrote, “There is def some sus s— going on,” reflecting suspicion about Wells’ disappearance. Another asked whether anyone had noticed unusual behavior earlier in the day. These messages captured real‑time confusion but did not establish what happened.
By midday July 5, friends debated why Wells would stay behind on the island. Several said it was out of character for him, echoing concerns later shared by his parents.
Chats Reveal Advice on Police Interviews
As investigators began contacting witnesses, the group’s conversations shifted. One participant advised others to “stick to what you know happened,” urging them not to speculate. Another recommended asking for an attorney, stressing that requesting legal counsel did not imply guilt.
Additionally, messages show friends warning each other about online accusations and discussing how to handle scrutiny on social media. Some urged the group to avoid fueling rumors and to stay consistent in their statements.
Conversations Shift Toward Public Scrutiny
By mid‑July, the chats focused on Wells’ funeral and the growing attention directed at the friend group. One message suggested attending the service and coordinating a statement for the media. Another asked whether Wells’ mother would welcome them at the funeral.
Case Remains Unresolved
Wells’ body was found on Horn Island on July 6. A Mississippi grand jury later declined to bring charges, and two autopsies listed his cause and manner of death as undetermined. His family continues to push for answers, citing deleted messages and gaps in the timeline revealed in the phone analysis.
