Today’s false ideologies of both major & indie artists

I want to open with a personal experience. The subject is my cousin, but not just any cousin.

False Ideologies: A Personal Story That Reveals a Larger Truth

He is a Hollywood actor who built a long and impressive career. He appeared as a major guest star on dramatic television series. He made numerous sitcom appearances. He also landed roles in major blockbuster films. His résumé stretches across decades. If you watch television or love film, you have seen him. He was a constant presence from the mid‑1980s through the early 2000s. The screen could not get enough of him. That sets the stage.

During one of our conversations, I asked if he ever considered writing or directing. Many actors shift into these areas when roles slow down. His answer was simple and firm. “No, Kenny, I’m an actor. I prefer to leave the writing to YOU guys.” Later, he surprised me by relocating from Hollywood to the South. He claimed “the South is the new Hollywood.”

A Relocation That Raises Questions

He believes I accept his explanation. I do not. I suspect he moved because roles declined and family real estate needed attention. I have wanted to tell him I do not buy his story. However, I refuse to risk a family reunion filled with shouting and flying furniture. Both action and inaction speak louder than words.

His attempt to maintain a certain public image mirrors what many musicians do today. Both major and independent artists cling to outdated ideologies about the music industry. They do so for different reasons, yet the pattern remains the same.

False Ideologies: Major Artists Hold Tight to Old Industry Hierarchies

Major‑label artists often try to maintain a hierarchy in appearance. They want to look elevated above the public and above independent artists. This effort attempts to mask a social reality they cannot control. For example, many major artists block direct “friending” or “connecting” on social platforms. Yet they welcome unlimited “likes.”

This gatekeeping comes straight from the old entertainment playbook. In that era, the public had limited access to performers. Today, wise artists know the industry has changed. It continues to evolve. To stay relevant, they must evolve with it.

They must also pass what I call “Deceit Unwarranted 101.” Many still pretend they sell millions of compact discs each week. In reality, they sell simple downloads. The act aims to hoodwink the public.

Even Beyoncé has acknowledged the truth. She stated that compact discs are selling slowly and are on their way out. Her admission carried weight. Industry insiders have said this for years. Artists ignored it. Hearing it from someone of her stature confirmed the shift.

Independent Artists Face Their Own False Ideologies

Independent artists also cling to outdated beliefs. A few still chase the broken major‑label system. Most, however, fall for the illusion of the Internet. They believe they can save money by doing everything themselves. They avoid hiring promoters and publicists. This belief could not be further from reality.

Their do‑it‑yourself approach demands far more work than expected. It requires skills they have not learned. It also requires simultaneous efforts across multiple areas. The Internet does not offer the easy path they imagine. When navigating unfamiliar business waters, they become fish swimming upstream. The challenge grows on national and international levels.

Wise independent artists eventually seek professional help. Promoters and publicists understand the areas where artists lack experience.

False Ideologies Carry Real Consequences

False ideologies harm anyone who embraces them. They harm creative artists most of all. Creative art brings joy, but it is not a public necessity. It is not a life‑saving resource. Artists who remain trapped in false beliefs will eventually face the consequences. The bubble always bursts.
