New Rutgers Law School Dean Makes History As The First Woman, First African American, and First LGTBQ To Hold The Position

Kimberly Mutcherson has made history as the first woman, first African American, and the first member of the LGBTQ community to be named co-dean of Rutgers–Camden Law School.

In a statement to the Courier Post, Chancellor Phoebe Haddon shared, “Kim Mutcherson is a collaborative leader who is positioned to build upon the momentum and energy of Rutgers Law. She is passionate about the value of a legal education that prepares creative thinkers who are ready to be leaders in virtually every aspect of our society.”

About the Scholar

Mutcherson’s expertise in bioethics and family & health law has led her to carve a path in the field of reproductive justice.

Prior to joining the Rutgers Law faculty in 2002, Mutcherson was a consulting attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights and a Fellow and then staff attorney with the HIV Law Project, both in New York.

She also served as an assistant professor at the NYU law school where she taught legal research and writing to incoming first year law students. She joins co-dean, David Lopez, and has expressed great excitement to collaborate with him to assume her new responsibilities.

In 1997, Mutcherson earned her juris doctor from Columbia Law School, where she was a Stone Scholar and received the Rosemann Prize for her commitment to public interest law. She also earned the Kirkland & Ellis public interest fellowship and co-founded the Women of Color Coalition.

“I am thrilled to be able to continue my service to Rutgers law as co-dean,” she said.

“Working with David Lopez, I know that our institution has a very bright future and will continue to provide a high quality legal education and produce lawyers who change the profession and the world for the better.”
