Democrat David Crowley has defeated Republican Tom Tiffany to become Wisconsin’s first Black governor, making history in the state’s 178-year history.
Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, defeated the Trump-backed congressman in Tuesday’s election. He will succeed Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who did not seek another term.
The Associated Press called the race at 10:28 p.m. Tuesday. Tiffany conceded before Crowley delivered his victory speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
From Milwaukee’s challenges to public service
At 40, Crowley brings a personal story shaped by the economic struggles he experienced growing up in Milwaukee.
He has spoken openly about poverty, housing instability and multiple evictions during his childhood. Those experiences helped shape his interest in public service and the issues he pursued throughout his political career.
Crowley began his political work on Russ Feingold’s 2010 reelection campaign. He later held government positions before winning a seat in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2016.
Four years later, voters elected him Milwaukee County executive. He became the first Black person to hold the position and, at the time, the youngest county executive in the state.
Crowley also returned to college while building his career. He became the first member of his family to graduate.
Crowley campaigned on affordability and public services
Throughout the campaign, Crowley focused on affordability, health care, child care and public education.
The Associated Press reported that his platform included expanding Medicaid, increasing child care funding and fully funding public schools.
He also pledged to challenge Act 10, the controversial 2011 Wisconsin law that sharply restricted collective bargaining rights for public employees.
Tiffany supported the law during his time in the Wisconsin Legislature. The issue remained a major dividing line between the candidates.
Meanwhile, Tiffany tried to make crime, taxes and data center development central campaign issues. He also tied Crowley to Democratic policies and criticized his record in Milwaukee County.
Crowley, in turn, challenged Tiffany’s close political ties to President Donald Trump.
Tiffany concedes as Crowley prepares to take office
After conceding, Tiffany congratulated Crowley and wished him and his family well.
Crowley now faces the task of leading a state with deep political divisions. He has pledged to represent Wisconsin residents across the political spectrum.
His running mate, Sarah Godlewski, will serve as lieutenant governor. The two are scheduled to take office in January.
Crowley’s victory marks a historic milestone for Wisconsin. He will become the first Black governor in a state that has never before elected a Black person to its highest office.
