MIAMI, Fla. — Akin “King” Liverpool, a 23‑year‑old scholar and community leader, was recovered in Biscayne Bay on June 14, 2026, two days after he went missing during a charter boat ride. His family reported him missing late June 12 after he did not return home from a friend’s birthday celebration.
Liverpool, a Fall 2023 initiate of the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was on a chartered 39‑foot vessel traveling from Hobie Beach toward the Miami River when he disappeared. According to investigators, he was last seen dancing on the bow of the boat before going overboard unnoticed. His absence was discovered later that evening, prompting the captain to contact law enforcement.
Search Efforts and Recovery
The U.S. Coast Guard received a call just before midnight on June 12. Crews searched overnight with Miami Police, Miami Fire Rescue, Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue and air units canvassing waters south of Brickell Key and Hobie Island Beach Park.
Liverpool’s body was recovered near Brickell Key on June 14. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has taken over the investigation and continues to review witness statements and vessel activity.
Akin Liverpool Was A Rising Academic With a Promising Future
Liverpool was widely admired for his academic achievements. He graduated from Florida Memorial University (FMU) in 2024, where he served as Mr. Sophomore and Mr. Homecoming. He recently earned two master’s degrees from Barry University and was preparing to pursue his doctorate.
Loved ones described him as a “bundle of joy,” a vibrant presence and a young man “going places.” His aunt told NBC6 he was respectful, reliable and deeply committed to his goals.
A Devastating Loss For His Family; GoFundMe Launched
Liverpool was the oldest of five children. His family says he carried responsibilities far beyond his age, serving as a protector, mentor and provider. He worked to support his mother and siblings and was known for showing up for anyone who needed him.
A GoFundMe created by relatives says his passing “has left an unimaginable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.” It notes that his siblings “lost their oldest brother, and someone they looked up to for guidance, support, and strength.”
His mother now faces the painful reality of laying her son to rest while caring for four grieving children.
Community Support and Ongoing Questions
Friends, fraternity brothers and FMU alumni have rallied around the family, sharing memories and donating to help with funeral expenses. Many describe Liverpool as a future leader whose life was only beginning to unfold.
FWC says the investigation remains active. Authorities have not released additional details about what caused Liverpool to go overboard.
