Salenah Cartier, a 23‑year‑old Houston scholar, has made history as the youngest Ph.D. graduate at the University of Houston, according to school records dating back to 2007. She earned her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, marking the latest milestone in an academic journey that began at an accelerated pace.

Cartier received her doctorate on May 13, continuing her work focused on expanding educational access for underserved communities. Her research centers on how learning systems shape opportunity and long‑term outcomes.

Education is the foundation of society, and I wholeheartedly believe that empowering underserved communities through education and technology can unlock a bucket of potential in those spaces,” Cartier told ABC13.

A Record‑Breaking Academic Journey

Cartier’s academic path has moved at a remarkable pace. In 2020, she became the youngest graduate in University of Houston history, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology at age 17. She completed a master’s degree in education at age 18, becoming the university’s youngest master’s graduate.

Her doctoral work continued her focus on curriculum, instruction, and the role of technology in learning. She has emphasized the importance of research, community partnerships, and service as tools for expanding educational equity.

Dr. Salenah Cartier’s Commitment to Underserved Communities

Cartier said her motivation comes from a desire to “give back” and use her research to fill gaps in educational access. She has partnered with charities, volunteered in local programs. Additionally, highlighted the role of technology in reaching students with fewer resources.

“With my degree, I plan on giving back in those spaces through policy, through research, and through practice,” she said.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Cartier shared her journey in a University of Houston video, offering advice to students pursuing ambitious goals. She encouraged young people to set clear plans, write them down, and work toward them consistently.

“Right now, I am so emotional because I wrote these goals down,” she said. “Looking back, I see that I’ve accomplished them. When you set a plan and work toward it, you can achieve anything.”
