Man charged in March crash that killed beloved New Jersey mother
Authorities charged Cormier on April 13 after receiving the laboratory findings.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Daniel Cormier, 31, of Manchester, was charged Monday with vehicular homicide and strict liability vehicular homicide in the March 7 crash that killed Freehold resident Shamirah Nolan, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Authorities said the charges followed laboratory results received April 13 that showed Cormier’s blood alcohol concentration measured 0.09, which is above New Jersey’s legal limit of 0.08. Investigators also found Gabapentin and Hydrocodone in his system. Officials said the substances rendered him unfit to drive.
Crash Investigation Began on March 7
Officers responded to Lakewood Road and Whitty Road around 11:05 p.m. after reports of a serious crash. Investigators said Cormier’s Volkswagen Jetta struck a guardrail, lost control, and crossed into oncoming traffic. The vehicle then collided head‑on with Nolan’s Honda Accord as she traveled northbound.
Nolan, 37, was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. Cormier was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non‑life‑threatening injuries and later released.
Officials said officers observed signs of impairment at the scene. Because of those observations, investigators obtained a court‑authorized blood draw at the hospital. The toxicology report later confirmed the presence of alcohol and prescription medications.
Charges Filed After Toxicology Results
Authorities charged Cormier on April 13 after receiving the laboratory findings. He surrendered to Toms River Township Police that same day. He was then transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he remains held pending a detention hearing.
Prosecutor Billhimer credited the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit–Vehicular Homicide Squad, the Toms River Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit for their work on the case.
Officials emphasized that all charges are accusations and that Cormier is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Shamirah Nolan’s Family and Community Response
Nolan’s family publicly called for answers in recent weeks as the investigation continued without charges. Her sister, Daaimah Parrish, confirmed Nolan’s identity to NJ.com and described her as someone who “lit up every room.” Parrish said Nolan was driving to her overnight shift at Complete Care at Bey Lea when the crash occurred.
Nolan worked as a certified nursing assistant and was a lifelong resident of Freehold. She was the mother of three daughters, ages 17, 18 and 19. A GoFundMe created to support the family continues to receive donations.
