Once homeless, Charlotte mother finds stability after community support transforms her future
Johnika Jamison, 39, holds a master’s degree and spent a decade working as a school counselor. But a series of medical crises and job loss pushed her family into.

Charlotte, NC — Last Mother’s Day, Johnika Jamison said she barely felt like a parent. Her family of five had been homeless for months, and her youngest daughter was only seven months old. She said each day felt heavier than the last as she tried to keep her children safe while searching for a way out.
Jamison, 39, holds a master’s degree and spent a decade working as a school counselor. But a series of medical crises and job loss pushed her family into homelessness, leaving her without income or stability. She said the speed of their decline stunned her and left her struggling to stay hopeful.
“I felt like a failure to my kids,” she told USA Today. “Everything kept piling up. It was hard to see a path forward.”
A Story That Sparked an Outpouring of Support
Jamison shared her experience publicly late last year, describing the challenges of navigating shelters, temporary stays and constant uncertainty. Her story resonated widely, and readers began reaching out, asking how they could help.
Although she had never considered crowdfunding, Jamison eventually created a GoFundMe campaign. Within weeks, hundreds of donors contributed more than $65,000, offering her family a chance to rebuild.
A Home After a Year of Instability
With the funds, Jamison secured a 15‑month lease, paying upfront to guarantee long‑term housing. For the first time in more than a year, her daughters have a permanent home. She said the shift felt overwhelming after months of fear and instability.
The new apartment also gave her space to reset, plan and begin rebuilding the life she once had. She said the support restored her confidence and reminded her that her family’s story mattered.
A Different Mother’s Day
This past Mother’s Day looked nothing like the last. Jamison now has a home, a sense of security and a community that stepped in when she needed it most. She said she hopes her story encourages others facing similar struggles to keep pushing, even when the path forward seems impossible.
Her journey, she said, is proof that a family’s future can change when people choose to care.
