Nolan Wells Prayer Organized by Pastor Jamal Bryant

The gathering at Greater St. John AME Church unfolded as a layered tribute, shaped by grief, faith and public demand. Pastor Jamal Bryant organized the rally, guiding the evening’s tone as the sanctuary filled with supporters and his message centered on justice. He warned that unanswered cases involving young Black men form a pattern that communities can no longer ignore.

Bryant argued that Mississippi “does not have 31 years,” pointing to civil rights cases that lingered for decades without resolution.

Multiple faith leaders from across the nation spoke, offering support for the family and praying for transparency in Wells’ death.

Nolan Wells Mother Speaks

Nolan Wells’ mother Christine Wonsley took the stage speaking about her son’s birthday and the ache of celebrating without him. She described the urge to call him that morning and sing her usual off‑key birthday song.

Afterwards, Ben Crump led a chant urging everyone to “say his name,” and the response, “Nolan Wells”, filled the church. The vigil ended with a birthday cake, balloons and a quiet chorus of “Happy Birthday” as Christine and Elmore Wonsley blew out candles for the son they lost.

Virtual Nolan Wells National Prayer

Earlier Wednesday, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network hosted a nationwide virtual prayer vigil. More than 550 people joined the online gathering.

During the virtual vigil, Wells’ parents said they miss hearing their son’s voice and remain determined to learn what happened.

“Nolan was an incredible person, and his loss has definitely affected our family in ways we could have never imagined,” Christine Wonsley said through tears at a virtual prayer vigil. “So I just ask that you please continue praying for us, especially today.”

Sharpton said the organization would continue supporting the family “until the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death come to light.”

Friends Speak Publicly

Three friends who were with Wells before he disappeared joined the virtual prayer vigil on Zoom, according to TMZ. They described Wells as “the brightest of lights” and said they had no involvement in his death.

Their appearance marked the first time they publicly addressed the case.

Investigation Continues

Wells vanished during a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island. His body was found two days later along the shoreline. Authorities have not released a cause of death.

Meanwhile, civil rights leaders and Nolan Wells’ family continue urging officials to release more information.

GoFundMe Surges

The verified GoFundMe for Wells’ family now nears $900,000, according to the fundraiser page. Donations have poured in from across the country as supporters help cover legal costs, memorial expenses and ongoing advocacy efforts.

The family said the national response shows how deeply Wells’ story has resonated.
