GoFundMe raises more than $500,000 to support family of Nolan Xavier Wells after tragic loss
Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared on July 4 during a boating trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.
A verified GoFundMe has raised more than $500,000 for the family of 18‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose death has drawn national attention. The fundraiser was launched to help support the family as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
What Happened to Nolan Wells?
Wells disappeared on July 4 during a boating trip to Horn Island, Mississippi. Officials have said the group traveled to the island by boat from a private dock in Ocean Springs. The group returned to the mainland without him. His mother reported him missing that night.
Wells absence triggered a large search involving the United Cajun Navy, local law enforcement, first responders and the U.S. Coast Guard. A U.S. Park Service ranger found a body matching his description on July 6, and the family later confirmed his death.
Authorities have not released a cause of death and say toxicology results are pending.
Family Seeks Answers
Wells’ parents say details surrounding their son’s disappearance do not add up. They have hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who raised concerns about inconsistencies in the timeline and investigative process.
According to Crump, some witnesses said Wells planned to return to the boat with friends, while others claimed he intended to remain on the island. Crump also questioned why Wells’ cellphone was reportedly left behind if he planned to stay on the island.
Crump’s team is conducting an independent investigation, including a private autopsy funded by Colin Kaepernick.
Community Comes Together Through GoFundMe
The GoFundMe describes Wells as a beloved son, brother and teammate remembered for his kindness and bright smile. Donations have poured in from neighbors, volunteers and strangers nationwide. Public figures have also expressed support. Tyler Perry offered to cover funeral costs, according to Crump. Media mogul Byron Allen donated $100,000 to the fundraiser.
Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, thanked supporters for their prayers and urged donors to use only the official GoFundMe. She warned that unauthorized fundraisers had appeared online.
The Ben Crump law firm urges anyone who may have saw anything or visited Horn Island on July 4 and have information to contact their office.
