WASHINGTON — The NAACP’s Office of General Counsel has joined the legal team representing the family of 18‑year‑old Nolan Wells, adding national civil rights resources to a case that has drawn growing scrutiny. Wells disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island with friends, and his body was found two days later.

NAACP Legal Team Joins Fight For Answers Into Nolan Wells Death

The NAACP announced its involvement Monday, saying the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death remain insufficiently explained. The organization said it will support the family’s attorneys and press authorities for transparency.

Leaders Cite Need for Transparency

Kristen Clarke, the NAACP’s general counsel, said the group is “taking up this fight to search for truth and to demand transparency” in Wells’ case. She said the investigation will be “victim‑focused.” Moreover, will draw on the organization’s long history of challenging incomplete or inadequate inquiries involving Black victims.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson said “the world is watching” and argued that Wells’ family deserves full transparency. He said early explanations left too many questions unanswered.

Nolan Wells Case Draws National Attention

The NAACP’s decision follows weeks of public concern and conflicting accounts about Wells’ final hours. The organization’s involvement underscores how the case has shifted from a local investigation to one attracting national scrutiny.

Family members and civil rights leaders have questioned:

  • Why Wells’ phone was found with one of the friends rather than with his body
  • Why online videos circulating after his disappearance remain unverified

Attorney Ben Crump, who already represents the family, said the NAACP’s participation strengthens efforts to obtain a comprehensive review. He previously noted discrepancies in witness accounts and said the family wants clarity about Wells’ last movements before he vanished.

Crump unveiled the findings of an independent autopsy commissioned by the family and paid for by Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Initiative at the NAACP’s national convention last month. The autopsy revealed Wells’ manner of death remains undetermined, reinforcing calls for deeper investigation.

Push for Federal Review Continues

Aside from involvement from the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus recently urged the Justice Department and FBI to launch a federal review, citing unanswered questions and the need for independent oversight.

The NAACP vowed to work with Crump’s team to ensure “no stone is left unturned” as Wells’ family seeks answers.
