More than $40,000 raised for father who drowned saving two strangers from rip current at Myrtle Beach
A GoFundMe has climbed past $40,000 for Derrick Moore, the Georgia teacher who died after rescuing two strangers from a rip current.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A GoFundMe for Derrick Moore, the Georgia teacher who died after rescuing two strangers from a rip current, have climbed past $40,000 as the community continues to rally ahead of his funeral this Saturday.
Rescue Attempt Turns Tragic
Moore, 47, entered the water near 10th Avenue South on Aug. 7 after seeing a young girl pulled under by a rip current. He managed to push her toward safety, but the current swept him underwater moments later. His body washed ashore the next morning.
Witnesses said Moore acted without hesitation. Myrtle Beach police confirmed lifeguards were off duty at the time, leaving bystanders to respond. The incident highlighted the dangers of late‑day surf conditions and the speed at which rip currents can intensify.
Community Support Continues to Grow
Moore’s death prompted an outpouring of support from former students, colleagues and families across DeKalb County, where he taught for more than 20 years. He was known as “Coach Moore,” a mentor who brought energy into classrooms and encouraged students on and off the field.
His daughter told WRAL the family is heartbroken, noting Moore did not know the child he saved. Tributes across social media describe him as selfless, devoted and consistent in his care for others.
GoFundMe Surpasses $40,000
A GoFundMe created to support Moore’s four children and cover funeral expenses has surpassed $40,000, with donations continuing to rise as the funeral approaches. Supporters have shared messages thanking Moore for his bravery and honoring the legacy he leaves behind.
The fundraiser reflects the community’s effort to help Moore’s family navigate the sudden loss of a father, educator and coach remembered for his compassion and courage.
Funeral Set for Saturday Aug. 22
Moore’s funeral will take place Saturday, Aug. 22, at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia, according to his obituary. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. celebration of life. He will later be interred at Graceland Cemetery in Decatur, Illinois.
