Beloved New Jersey teacher fatally stabbed, reportedly by husband, says prosecutors
Authorities said Monica Morris, 51, a beloved culinary arts teacher at Trenton Central High School, was fatally stabbed early Tuesday morning.
Monica Morris, 51, was killed early Tuesday inside her Gloucester Township home, a loss that has shaken loved ones and the Trenton community where she spent years teaching and mentoring students.
Morris, a beloved culinary arts teacher at Trenton Central High School, was known for her patience, warmth and steady guidance. Her family said she poured that same care into her children.
A verified GoFundMe organized by her son‑in‑law, Junior Joseph, is helping her children with funeral expenses. Joseph wrote that Morris “inspired countless students with her kindness and dedication,” and said her death has left a profound void for her family and the community.
As of Thursday, April 30, the fundraiser had raised more than $14,000.
What Police Say Happened
Gloucester Township police found Morris fatally stabbed inside a burning third‑floor bedroom at the couple’s Freedom Way home around 2:30 a.m. Officials said officers found her husband, Jerome Morris, 50, at the scene covered in blood and holding a knife. Authorities later charged him with first‑degree murder and weapons offenses.
Investigators say someone intentionally set the fire inside the home. At this time, police didn’t specify if Jerome Morris set the fire.
Daughter’s 911 Call and Chaotic Scene
Authorities said Morris’ daughter called 911 early Tuesday morning and told dispatchers, “He’s killing my mom.” Neighbors reported hearing screams moments before police arrived. Two other adults escaped the home as flames spread through the bedroom. Three officers suffered minor injuries while trying to reach Morris.
Ongoing Investigation
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said Morris had recently left her husband and planned to divorce him. Court documents cite a history of stalking, threats and harassment. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire, and they are treating it as possible arson.
A Teacher Remembered for Heart and Dedication
Community members and students described Morris as a devoted and generous teacher whose influence stretched far beyond her classroom.
The Trenton School District said she was “a dedicated educator who cared deeply about her students and took great pride in her work,” noting that she made a lasting impact through her mentorship and commitment to helping students grow both in and out of school.
