Monica Morris, 51, a beloved culinary arts teacher at Trenton Central High School, was fatally stabbed early Tuesday morning. Gloucester Township police found her inside a burning third‑floor bedroom at the couple’s Freedom Way home around 2:30 a.m.

Officials said police found her husband, Jerome Morris, 50, at the scene covered in blood and holding a knife. Authorities later charged him with first‑degree murder and weapons offenses.

Investigators say someone intentionally set the fire inside the home.

Authorities said the tragedy unfolded after Morris’ daughter called 911, telling dispatchers, “He’s killing my mom.” Neighbors reported hearing screams for help moments before police arrived. Two other adults escaped the home as flames spread through the bedroom. Three responding officers suffered minor injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

Camden County Prosecutor’s said Morris had recently left her husband and was planning to divorce him. Court documents cite a history of stalking, threats and harassment. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire, and they are treating it as possible arson.

Monica Morris Was A Beloved Teacher Remembered for Kindness and Heart

Community members and students described Morris as a devoted and kind teacher whose influence reached far beyond her classroom.

The Trenton School District said she was “a dedicated educator who cared deeply about her students and took great pride in her work.” The district noted that she made a lasting impact through her passion, mentorship and commitment to helping students grow both in and out of school.

A verified GoFundMe, organized by her son‑in‑law Junior Joseph, is helping her children with funeral expenses. Joseph wrote that Morris “inspired countless students with her kindness and dedication,” and said her loss has left a profound void for her family and the community.

As of Wednesday, April 29, the fundraiser had raised more than $9,000.
