Police Describe How the Iowa City Shooting Unfolded

The shooting occurred around 1:45 a.m. on April 19 at the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall. According to Iowa City Police, 17‑year‑old Damarian Marshawn Jones of Cedar Rapids was involved in a fight. He then reportedly retrieved a gun from another person and fired six shots into a crowd.

Police said five people were injured, including Peters, who suffered the most serious injuries. The department also stated there is no evidence any of the victims were targeted. Investigators confirmed none of them were involved in the initial fight.

Jones was arrested. He faces five counts of attempted murder, according to police. He remains at large, and the department said it expects additional arrests as the investigation continues.
