Louvenia “Ms. Lou” Jenkins: A Barrier‑Breaking Life Rooted in Faith

Jenkins became the first Black woman to buy a home in the Palisades more than 60 years ago. She built a life defined by community, service and quiet leadership. Although the January wildfire destroyed the home she cherished, she continues to move forward with grace.

“I’m speechless. There’s so much love,” Jenkins told FOX 11 Los Angeles. “This is what it feels like to be really loved.”

She said her strength comes from her faith and her mother’s example.

“I have a strong faith, and I can only thank God that I’ve always been a strong person,” she said, per the outlet. “My mother was a very strong person, and that’s what I emulate.”

Ms Lou Is A Community Icon Who Shaped Generations

Friends describe Ms. Lou as a mentor, athlete, educator and neighbor who welcomed everyone. Her influence spans decades.

“She has always been a beloved, community‑oriented person,” former neighbor Gigi Neves told FOX 11.

Neves said Jenkins became part of her family and a role model for her children.

“A hero is someone who doesn’t give up in hard circumstances,” Neves said, per the station. “That’s exactly what Grandma Lou does.”

Wisdom From 98 Years

Despite the praise, Jenkins remains humble. She insists she is simply living life with intention.

Her secret to longevity is simple.

“I start with the Golden Rule,” she told FOX 11. “I always have treated others the way I want to be treated. And I’ve always tried to live healthily.”
