Family launches GoFundMe as actor Samuel Monroe Jr. fights meningitis on life support
A GoFundMe has been launched by family to support actor Samuel Monroe Jr., who remains on life support after a prolonged battle with meningitis.
Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., known for his roles in Menace II Society, The Players Club, is fighting for his life as his family turns to the public for support. The 52‑year‑old actor remains on life support in a Southern California hospital while battling severe meningitis, according to family statements.
His wife, Shawna Stewart, confirmed that the family created a GoFundMe to help cover mounting medical expenses. She said the illness began after Monroe contracted meningitis during a filming trip in Las Vegas, where repeated misdiagnoses allowed the infection to spread to his spine and brain.

The fundraiser describes Monroe as a devoted husband, father, and stepfather who has endured two brain surgeries during his nine‑month health battle. It notes that his children along with his wife, mother, and siblings, have stayed by his side as he fights for his life.
According to the GoFundMe, donations will help cover medical bills and provide stability for his children during this crisis.

Monroe’s mother, Joyce, shared an emotional message on Facebook, asking for “mercy and grace” for her son. She expressed her love and faith as the family continues to hope for his recovery.
Stewart echoed that plea, urging the public to keep Monroe in their prayers as he remains on life support. She said the family receives daily updates and continues to lean on faith and community support.

Monroe built a memorable presence in 1990s film and television. Some of his credits include Tales from the Hood, Set It Off, The Players Club, Out All Night, NYPD Blue, and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. His work contributed to an era of influential Black storytelling on screen.
