Kiara Brokenbrough, woman who went viral for $47 dress, dies during childbirth at 32.
Kiara Brokenbrough, the woman who went viral for her $47 wedding dress and $500 ceremony in 2022, died during childbirth on March 30, according to her obituary and a GoFundMe created for her family.
Family Confirms Kiara Brokenbrough’s Death as Newborn Son Fights in NICU
Brokenbrough died as her son, Jonah, was born. Her obituary described her final act as one of devotion, stating that “Kiara’s last assignment was the gift of her greatest creation, Jonah, a son for her beloved husband.”
Jonah remains in the NICU and is showing “remarkable improvement,” her family said. They added that he is “inspiring his family members and NICU hospital staff with his progress.”
GoFundMe Raises Support for Kiara Brokenbrough’s Husband and Newborn
A GoFundMe launched by relatives said the family is facing an “unexpected” loss while caring for a newborn in intensive care. The fundraiser noted that Joel Brokenbrough, her husband, will need support as he navigates life as a new father after losing his wife.
Bride Went Viral for Her Minimalist 2022 Wedding
Brokenbrough became a national headline in 2022 after revealing she spent only $47 on her wedding dress, $100 on her husband’s suit, and kept their entire Los Angeles ceremony under $500. She and Joel limited their guest list to 30 attendees to avoid permit fees and asked attendees to pay for their own food and drinks.
At the time, she told the Los Angeles Times they refused to “go into debt over a wedding” and wanted a simple ceremony rooted in faith and commitment.
Couple Was Preparing for a Move Before Tragedy
The couple met in 2016, reconnected in 2018, and married less than a month after getting engaged. According to the GoFundMe, they were in the process of moving from West Virginia back to California when Brokenbrough died.
Days before her death, the couple held a California baby shower and gender reveal, sharing photos of the celebration with family and friends.
Black Maternal Health
Brokenbrough’s death comes just weeks before Black Maternal Health Week was observed from April 11 to April 17. The national campaign highlights the ongoing crisis facing Black mothers in the United States.
CDC data shows Black women die from pregnancy‑related causes at rates three times higher than White women. The agency also reports that over 80% of pregnancy‑related deaths are preventable. Health experts link the disparity to unequal care, delayed treatment, and long‑standing systemic barriers.
At the time of this posting, the fundraiser has raised $100,000. In a follow-up post on the GoFundMe, Joel shared a tribute to his newborn son.
“You are truly blessed, and there is great purpose and authority within your bloodline,” he wrote.
