OWN to premiere “One Golden Summer”, an award-winning film about a Chicago little league team’s rise and fall
NEW YORK — TNT Sports and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will premiere the award‑winning documentary ONE GOLDEN SUMMER, a film that revisits the rise and fallout of the 2014 Jackie Robinson West Little League team.
The documentary airs April 7 at 10:30 p.m. ET on TBS and again May 7, 2026, on OWN as an OWN Spotlight.
ONE GOLDEN SUMMER Documentary: A Story That Captured a Nation
In 2014, a group of boys from Chicago’s South Side stunned the country. They became the first all‑Black team to win the U.S. Little League Championship. Their run energized a city and inspired national pride. Yet months later, officials stripped the title over disputed residency boundaries. The reversal sparked intense debate and overshadowed the team’s achievement.
ONE GOLDEN SUMMER aims to reclaim that narrative. The film places the players’ voices at the center of the story.
One Golden Summer Documentary: With Acclaim and Purpose
The documentary earned major honors at the Chicago International Film Festival, including:
- The Chicago Award
- Audience Award for Best Documentary
These recognitions helped position the film as a definitive account of the team’s journey. The filmmakers use the platform to explore excellence, systemic barriers, and the enduring strength of brotherhood.
A Return to the South Side
The film moves beyond the field. It offers an intimate portrait of the community that shaped the players. Through rare footage and emotional interviews, the documentary traces how thirteen boys carried the hopes of a city. It also examines how they faced the pressure of sudden fame and the weight of a national controversy.

Key Themes Include:
- Brotherhood: The players describe bonds that lasted long after the season ended.
- Resilience: They reflect on how they navigated scrutiny and disappointment.
- Systemic Hurdles: The film investigates the structures that shaped their experience.
- Legacy: It asks what defines a champion when trophies disappear but impact remains.
A Broader Look at Sports and Society
The filmmakers frame the story as more than a sports narrative. Instead, they present a meditation on fairness, community, and the meaning of legacy. The documentary argues that some victories live in memory, not record books.
The film also highlights the cultural significance of the “Greatest Show on Dirt,” a nickname that captured the team’s style and spirit. Their run became a symbol of joy and possibility for many families across Chicago.
A Legacy Revisited
ONE GOLDEN SUMMER offers a fresh look at a team that once stood at the center of national attention. The documentary invites viewers to reconsider the meaning of victory and the cost of public scrutiny. It also honors the players who carried both pride and pressure during a remarkable season.
The film stands as a tribute to the power of storytelling and the enduring impact of a single summer that shaped lives far beyond the diamond.
