Beloved College of San Mateo football player Ja’Marion “Pop” Grace killed in car crash

Family members are mourning the loss of Ja’Marion Grace, known affectionately as “Pop,” after a fatal crash early Sunday morning in San Jose, Calif. Grace, 19, played football at the College of San Mateo. People are remembering him as a joyful, determined young man who “lit up every room he walked into.”

Grace died after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed on Highway 101 near the Yerba Buena Road exit. The California Highway Patrol said the 19‑year‑old driver from San Mateo lost control, ejecting Grace from the vehicle. He died at the scene.

Crash details under investigation

According to local reports, the 2013 Ford Fusion Grace was in was traveling northbound when it veered off the roadway and rolled. CHP officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. Investigators have not determined whether impairment played a role, and the cause remains under review, per CBS News.

Two other student‑athletes were injured. One remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while the other is recovering at home.

Community remembers “Pop” Grace

Grace’s teammates described him as a brother, not just a teammate. They said he brought energy, humor and kindness to the locker room and made people feel valued. “Pop gave everything he had each and every day,” the team wrote in a tribute on social media.

His mother told KRON4 he was “determined” and “had so much life ahead of him,” while relatives recalled his smile and ability to connect with others.

Grace grew up in Fairfield, Calif. and graduated from Vanden High School before joining the Bulldogs as a freshman defensive back. He appeared in one game this season.

GoFundMe launched in his memory

A GoFundMe has been launched to support Grace’s family and help cover funeral expenses. Organizers described him as a son, grandson, brother and friend whose presence brought “love, laughter and warmth” to everyone around him.
