President Biden to establish national monument honoring Emmett Till
On Tuesday, President Biden will sign a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument.
President Biden will reportedly sign a proclamation on Tuesday establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument.
The signing will take place on the 82nd anniversary of Till’s birthday.
Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicago native, was abducted, tortured and lynched in 1955 while visiting family in Mississippi. His murder became a catalyst in galvanizing the civil rights movement.
Emmett Till National Monument
The monument will be located across three sites in Mississippi and Illinois, according to reports.
Locations
One will be located in the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in the Chicago South Side historically Black neighborhood of Bronzeville, where Till’s killing was mourned in September 1955.
The second site will be at Graball Landing, Mississippi, where Till’s body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River
The third is the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Till’s murderers were tried by an all-white jury and acquitted.
“The new monument will protect places that tell the story of Emmett Till’s too-short life and racially-motivated murder, the unjust acquittal of his murderers, and the activism of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, who courageously brought the world’s attention to the brutal injustices and racism of the time, catalyzing the civil rights movement,” a White House official told CNN.
