Grammy-nominated opera and gospel singer Jubilant Sykes died at age 71 after being stabbed inside his California home. Authorities confirmed his death Tuesday and announced the arrest of his 31-year-old son, Micah Sykes, on suspicion of murder.
Police Response and Arrest
Officers discovered Sykes with critical stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Police recovered a weapon and detained Micah Sykes without incident.
Authorities have not immediately determined what led to the stabbing.
Investigators said the case remains active.
Julibant Sykes’ Musical Legacy
Sykes earned international acclaim for his versatility across opera, jazz, and gospel. He received a Grammy nomination in 2010 for best classical album with Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, performing the demanding Celebrant role. His career included performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Deutsche Oper Berlin, London’s Barbican Centre, the Kennedy Center, the Apollo Theater, and the Hollywood Bowl.
Early Life and Inspiration
Born in Los Angeles in 1954, Sykes began singing soprano as a child before transitioning to baritone. He later expanded into jazz and gospel, and acting. In a 2019 interview with his Alma mater California State Fullerton, he credited his teachers for shaping his career, saying they “poured their lives into me” and provided the foundation for his success.

Police continue to examine evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as the community mourns the loss of a celebrated artist whose voice spanned genres and generations.
