Four arrested in Newark shooting that killed three, including 10-year-old
Essex County Prosecutor’s office announced the suspects face murder, assault, and conspiracy charges.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with last month’s Newark shooting that killed three people and injured two others.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 near Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street, prosecutors said.
Newark Shooting Suspects
Essex County Prosecutor’s office announced the suspects face murder, assault, and conspiracy charges.
Authorities identified them as:
- Almuta Thomas, 31;
- Quayon Williams-King, 26;
- Furquan Boykin Jr., 19;
- a 16-year-old.
Thomas and Williams-King also face aggravated arson and vehicle theft charges, prosecutors confirmed Thursday.
Newark Shooting Victims Identified
The victims were 10-year-old Jordan Garcia, 21-year-old Kiyah Mae Scott, 19-year-old Masi Rogers, and 60-year-old Sheppard Miller.
Two others, including Jordan’s brother Jayceon, 11, survived with injuries, officials reported.
Investigation Findings
Later after the shooting, detectives had a break in the case after they discovered a stolen vehicle abandoned and burned in Newark.
Investigators linked another stolen car to the suspects, which led to a police chase on Nov. 17.
That chase ended with Williams-King’s arrest and another man taken into custody, officials confirmed.
Although recovered firearms did not match those used, detectives reconstructed the attack timeline.
Authorities said Williams-King picked up Thomas, then met Boykin and the juvenile before driving to the scene.
Boykin and the juvenile allegedly opened fire, hitting five victims before fleeing with Thomas and Williams-King.
All four suspects remain in custody, prosecutors said.
Newark Shooting: Families Remember Victims
The Newark community continues to mourn four lives lost in last month’s shooting.
Remembering Jordan Garcia
Jordan Garcia, 10, was a budding athlete who loved football and basketball. His mother, Stephanie Garcia, described him as an “innocent, pure soul” who trusted everyone. She recalled his daily routine of playing sports at the recreation center with his brothers. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover funeral costs, medical bills, and family support.
Remembering Kiyah Mae Scott
Kiyah Mae Scott, 21, was remembered as a devoted mother to her three-year-old son, Sevyn. Her mother, Annette Ryan, said Scott was bright and selfless, noting the family had planned to leave Newark because of violence before the tragedy. Relatives confirmed a GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Sevyn.
Remembering Masi Rogers
Masi Rogers, 19, initially survived the attack but died of his injuries on Nov. 20. His cousin, Jabir Brinkley, described him as the “protector” of his mother and siblings, saying his goal in life was to care for his family.
Sheppard Miller, 60, was also injured during the attack and later died, prosecutors confirmed. Community members described him as a respected elder whose loss deepened the tragedy’s impact.
