An 11-year-old Michigan soccer player is honoring his late mother as he pursues a major international training opportunity in Barcelona.
C.J. Haynie moved to Michigan this summer after his mother died from breast cancer, a loss his family says changed his life. He now uses soccer as his outlet, pushing himself through grief while chasing his dream of becoming a professional athlete.
His father, Carnel Haynie, told WLNS 6 soccer was his mother’s favorite sport. He also said watching C.J. play brought her joy. C.J. now wears jersey number 39 to honor her age when she died. On Oct. 2, he scored three goals in a match, which his father said represented the three decades she lived.
Young Athlete Shines in Michigan
Before moving, C.J. earned multiple tournament MVP awards in Colorado. After relocating, he joined Liverpool Michigan, where the team is 6–1. He leads the team in goals and has scored two game‑winners this season. His father said C.J. trained constantly after his mother’s death and used the sport to cope with the heartbreak.
C.J. said he plays hard because he believes his mother is “watching from the skies.” He and his twin sister, Zoe, continue to cherish memories of their mother as they adjust to life in Michigan.
Selected for Elite Training in Spain
C.J. was selected for international soccer training at Barça Academy in Barcelona, where he will train from October 23 to November 4, 2026. He said he is excited to learn from professional players and hopes to return stronger. His father said C.J. was chosen from a large pool of young athletes.
The opportunity gives C.J. access to a new soccer culture and advanced coaching. His father said the experience could shape his future in the sport. He also said the training represents a major step forward during a difficult season in C.J.’s life.
Family Launches Fundraiser for Travel Costs
Because the trip requires international travel and a European chaperone, C.J.’s father launched a verified GoFundMe to cover the full cost. The fundraiser explains that soccer has helped C.J. heal, dream, and stay focused despite the loss of his mother. It also says every donation helps make the opportunity possible.
Haynie said the family is excited but faces financial challenges. He hopes community support will help C.J. reach Barcelona and continue honoring his mother through the sport she loved.
