OWN announces October premieres for two new Iyanla Vanzant Spotlight specials
OWN will premiere two new OWN Spotlight specials featuring Emmy Award‑winning spiritual teacher and bestselling author Iyanla Vanzant.
OWN will premiere two new OWN Spotlight specials featuring Emmy Award‑winning author and life coach Iyanla Vanzant, according to a media alert released Wednesday. The specials air Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, marking Vanzant’s return to a live audience format.
Both specials will stream on discovery+ and HBO Max the following day.
Specials Focus on Family Conflict and Communication
The network said the new installments continue OWN Spotlight’s focus on candid conversations and documentary‑style storytelling centered on issues affecting Black communities. Vanzant will guide guests and audience members through discussions involving family conflict, communication gaps and long‑standing relational challenges.
First Special Examines Mothers and Daughters
Friday, Oct. 9 — Mothers & Daughters: Torn Apart with Iyanla Vanzant
The first special centers on three generations of women working to address unresolved tensions. OWN said Vanzant will lead participants through conversations aimed at confronting painful experiences and breaking harmful patterns. The event features a live studio audience.
Second Special Explores Communication Between Black Men and Women
Friday, Oct. 16 — What Black Men Say vs. What Black Women Hear with Iyanla Vanzant
The second special focuses on communication gaps in modern relationships. According to the alert, Vanzant convenes a live audience for an open discussion on how men and women interpret one another’s words and intentions. OWN described the conversation as emotionally charged but centered on understanding.
OWN Highlights Emotional Themes and Community Impact
In the alert, OWN said the specials offer “a space where pain is not hidden and vulnerability is met with compassion rather than judgment,” particularly for Black women who have carried families and communities through difficult seasons.
The network added that the conversations address “generational fractures between mothers and daughters” and the “disconnect between Black men and Black women,” issues it said many people struggle with privately.
OWN also stated that Vanzant’s work “is not just conversations about what’s broken,” noting that she encourages participants to “repair, reconnect, and rediscover understanding, grace, and love” when they engage in honest dialogue.
Vanzant said many conflicts stem from “generations of unmet needs, unspoken truths, and unheard hearts.” She added that healing begins when people “listen beyond pain” and “speak beyond fear.”
