11-year-old North Carolina boy Kylen Mikai Baldwin died after a car struck him while he rode his electric scooter in Winston-Salem.
A beloved 11-year-old North Carolina boy died after a car struck him while he rode his electric scooter in Winston-Salem.
Kylen Mikai Baldwin was hit on Vargrave Street near Mock Street on Oct. 18 around 8:19 p.m., according to police. Officers found him lying in the roadway with life‑threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Investigators said Kylen was riding north on Vargrave Street when a 2014 Lexus traveling in the same direction hit him and fled. Police identified the driver as Afmari Zelestino Fajardo, 31, who was later arrested. She faces felony hit‑and‑run charges, driving with a revoked license, and failing to report an accident.
School and Teammates Remember Kylen
Kylen attended Hanes Magnet School, where administrators informed students and staff of his death, reports WFMY 2. The district’s crisis team met with counselors to support grieving classmates. School leaders urged families to talk with their children and reassure them during the difficult week.
Kylen also played youth football for the Winston-Salem Tarheels, whose coaches described him as humble, kind, and deeply loved. The team said he never spoke badly about anyone and made friends easily. They asked the community to keep his parents in their prayers.
Community Holds Vigils and Offers Support
About 150 people gathered for a candlelight vigil at the crash site Friday, Oct. 23, reports WGHP Greensboro. Attendees wore Kylen’s favorite colors, black and green, and brought stuffed animals. His mother said Halloween was his favorite holiday and described him as a sweet, humble boy who “attracted people like magnets.” His father said Kylen had “a great smile” and was loved by everyone who met him.
Police said their hearts and prayers go out to the family as they continue to mourn. They also said the investigation remains active.
Fundraiser Helps Family With Expenses
The community is rallying around Kylen’s parents as they face medical and funeral costs. A verified GoFundMe has been launched to support the family during their grief. Supporters say they want to help ease the financial burden and honor Kylen’s memory.
Kylen’s death has shaken Winston-Salem, where families, classmates, and teammates continue to share tributes. Many say they want justice for the boy and comfort for the parents who lost their son far too soon.
