Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer John Paris is now in rehab following hospitalization

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris has entered rehabilitation after spending more than two months in a San Francisco hospital. He suffered a critical medical emergency on Aug. 6, minutes before the band’s scheduled concert with Lionel Richie.
Doctors performed two major surgeries and placed Paris in medically induced comas during his treatment. He briefly woke on Aug. 20 but required further sedation due to unstable blood pressure and breathing issues.
Fundraiser Highlights Mounting Medical Costs
A GoFundMe update confirmed Paris’ move to rehab and revealed he is recovering from a spinal cord injury. His family said he lacked medical insurance when the emergency occurred, creating significant financial strain. The fundraiser has raised between $98,000 and $100,000 toward a $110,000 goal.
“John’s prolonged hospitalization, spinal cord injury, rehabilitation and continuing medical needs have created a financial situation far beyond what we anticipated when Standing With John began,” the fundraiser update reported.
“[Wife] Kathy [Merrick] and John are pursuing every available source of assistance, including Medicare and workers’ compensation, but what ultimately will be covered remains unresolved.”
Organizers said reaching rehabilitation is a milestone but warned Paris faces a long road toward regaining independence. They urged supporters to donate or share his story as Phase Two of the fundraiser begins.
John Paris suffered medical emergency during concert
Emergency crews responded to a cardiac incident at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Aug. 6. Paris was transported in critical condition, prompting the band to postpone the show. The concert was later canceled after Richie experienced a separate health issue.
Paris joined Earth, Wind & Fire in 2001 and remains a key part of the group’s touring lineup. His recovery timeline has not been announced.
