Florida’s debated welfare drug testing finally kicks in
A much debated law over drug testing welfare recipients in the state of Florida has now become a law.
A much debated law over drug testing welfare recipients in the state of Florida has now become a law. Stating it was “unfair to Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction” Gov. Rick Scott signed the legislature on Friday.
Florida welfare drug testing
Under the law, The Florida Department of Children and Family Services must conduct drug tests for recipients applying for assistance to the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Programs.
Recipients must pay for the drug testing, and if they pass, will be reimbursed their money. Those who fail the drug testing may designate another person to receive the benefits for their children.
After the bill was signed, five democrats from the state called the bill “unconstitutional“. ACLU is also considering filing a law suit.
Update: Florida eventually dropped the requirements.
