Liberty City, FL leaders to be honored with mosaic mural
The two longtime leaders worked in education, civil rights, and community advocacy. Organizers propose a public mosaic mural at Charles Hadley Park.
MIAMI, Fla. – A community committee in Liberty City has announced plans to honor Miller J. and Nancy S. Dawkins. The two longtime leaders worked in education, civil rights, and community advocacy. Organizers propose a public mosaic mural at Charles Hadley Park.
Legacy of Service
The Dawkins Olympic-size pool already bears their names. The mural would add a visual tribute to their decades of civic involvement. Nancy Dawkins, 102, remains active in local organizations. Miller Dawkins, a former Miami city commissioner, served until his death.
Honoring The Dawkins Project Details
Committee members say the mural will be Liberty City’s first mosaic of its kind. They selected artist Marvin Weeks to lead the design. Weeks will also host a youth workshop introducing students to the Dawkins’ history and careers in art.
Educational Component
Plans include a documentary about the “Railroad Shop / Colored Addition,” land now known as Charles Hadley Park. The film will feature an interview with Nancy Dawkins. Organizers say the documentary will highlight Liberty City’s heritage alongside the mural unveiling.
Fundraising Goals to honor the Dawkins
A GoFundMe has been created to help raise funds for the initiative. The committee seeks $80,000 by January 1, 2026. Funds would cover artist fees, documentary production, and unveiling events. The goal is to complete the project in February 2026, during Black History Month.
Community Response
Supporters say the mural would recognize two figures central to Liberty City’s history. The committee has invited donations to help meet the fundraising target.
