Kendrick Lamar helps make Detroit boy’s birthday unforgettable after life‑changing dog attack

DETROIT — Kendrick Lamar helped make a 7‑year‑old Detroit boy’s birthday unforgettable, surprising him with a FaceTime call and an invitation to visit Los Angeles, according to Click On Detroit.

Romell Frazier Jr., 7, lost both of his arms in a March dog attack that also severely injured his legs. He has undergone multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. His mother told the outlet he continues to face additional surgeries before he can begin using prosthetics.

Romell’s Birthday Wish Granted

Romell’s only birthday wish after returning home from the hospital was to hear from his favorite rapper. Lamar called him on July 31, greeting him with, “What’s up man, how you feeling?” and telling him, “I’m glad you reached out. I’m glad I got to talk to you.”

During the call, Lamar praised the boy’s resilience:

“You continue to be great, continue to keep that smile on your face. You’re giving us a whole lot of inspiration with how strong you are. You got a beautiful life to live.”

He then invited Romell to visit him in Los Angeles. The boy immediately asked if his mother could come too.

Jones said the call was “everything she hoped for her son,” adding that he “won’t stop talking about this.”

Community Comes Together To Support His Recovery

Romell was attacked by two pit bulls on March 19. The injuries resulted in the amputation of both arms and significant damage to his right calf and left foot. He spent months relearning basic tasks and continues to undergo surgeries as he works toward using prosthetics.

A GoFundMe has been created to help the family with medical expenses, ongoing care and future prosthetics. Thousands of dollars have been raised since the attack, easing the financial burden as Romell continues his recovery.

Romell’s mother said her son’s spirit has remained strong despite the challenges. “He doesn’t be sad, he doesn’t be complaining about being in pain. He is as happy as can be.”

Lamar also praised Jones directly, telling her, “It goes to show how great of a parent you are and the household you got for him. He had that smile on him, and he’s just pushing, and he’s showing that strength.”

The call, shared widely across Detroit media, has become a symbol of hope for Romell and his family as they continue navigating a long and difficult recovery.
