Over the last several years, Chicago has emerged as one of the most violent cities in the country. Much of the violence has claimed the lives of young victims.
In 2007, several Chicago-area parents who refused to sit on the sidelines of a city overrun by violence and gun violence formed Purpose Over Pain.
Purpose Over Pain
An organization formed by bereaving family members of children killed by gun violence, Purpose Over Pain provides a network of support for grieving families and aims to prevent violence and the “code of silence” through education to community youth on dangers of gun violence.
I initially saw the story on America’s Most Wanted, and I couldn’t help but to be moved by these parents stories.
The kids came from good families, who were on the right path. Victims of drive-bys, senseless revenges, and even innocent victims of random killings because of “gang initiations”.
When is enough, enough? I applaud their efforts because someone has to speak up.
Despite the suffering brought into each of their lives, the members of the Purpose Over Pain are turning tragedy into a positive force, and showing the impact that can be made through dedication and commitment to the community.
