MLK Day : Remembering The Dream

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of character and dignity who had a dream that one day we would all be equal. He is known as one of the most influential figures in American history and a leader in initiating change during the Civil Rights Movement.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King’s legacy is celebrated nationwide as streets, schools, and many other accolades are celebrated in his honor.
Most recently, King’s legacy was celebrated as a monument was revealed in the National Mall in Washington, DC. The new monument which was revealed in August of 2011, celebrates the ideals King imposed. Quotations from his speech display the memory of his message and a 30-foot sculpture called the “stone of hope” designed by Martin’s famous line “I have a dream”
I Have A Dream
Today marks the 150th anniversary of King’s speech ‘I Have A Dream’, and it couldn’t be a more perfect day for the Presidential Inauguration. The countless efforts of King and others made it possible for Barack Obama to become the first Black president of the United States. History has been made as President Barack Obama enters his second term as the President of the United States. This day will always be an important part of history. More importantly, understanding the importance of remembering the dream.
During the last years of King’s life, his messages stressed the importance of loving yourself, equality of others, and embracing your heritage. King not only worked for the love of Black America, he worked for the love of a better America.
If it wasn’t for Dr. King, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I continue to remember the dream and walk by faith just as he did. Understanding and knowing my history is the reason why I strive to be a better person.
We proudly celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King and recognize we definitely have came a long way. It is imperative to always remember the dream, and never let the dream become deferred.
The untimely death of Dr. King made it clear that the agenda must be continued. The fight for equality and justice still continues today.
