Former NFL Player turned Maryland history teacher Tre’ Johnson dies at 54
Former Washington offensive lineman Tré Johnson died unexpectedly, according to his wife. He was 54. A GoFundMe has been launched for his children.
Tre’ Johnson, a former NFL offensive lineman who later became a respected Maryland high school history teacher, died Sunday during a short family trip. He was 54.
Family Announces Sudden Loss
Johnson’s wife, Irene, shared the news in a Facebook post. She said he died “suddenly and unexpectedly” while traveling with family.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly … during a brief family trip,” she wrote.
She added that she and their four children — Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden — remain devastated and in shock.
A verified GoFundMe has been launched to support the children during this time.
Remembering Tre Johnson: NFL Career Marked by Strength and Consistency
Born in New York City, Johnson attended Peekskill (N.Y.), before he starred at Temple Univ. After college, Washington drafted him 31st overall in 1994. He played for Washington through 2000, spent 2001 with Cleveland, and returned to Washington for his final season in 2002.
He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1999 and became known for his durability and power on the offensive line.
A Second Career in the Classroom
After retiring from the NFL, Johnson began teaching history at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. He taught for more than 20 years and became a beloved mentor to students and colleagues.
His wife said recent health issues forced him to take a leave of absence before his death.
Community Mourns a Devoted Father and Educator
Friends, former teammates, and students remember Johnson as a dedicated father who supported his children’s activities and a teacher who cared deeply about his students’ growth.
The Washington Commanders also expressed condolences, calling the loss heartbreaking.
“We’re heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre’ Johnson,” the Washington Commanders posted on the team’s X account. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
