20-year-old Keith Agee has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his child’s mother, 18-year-old Brooklyn Sims.

The reason will shock you

Prosecutors say Agee committed the crime because he falsely believed that Sims had given him an STD.

To make matters worse, his mother allegedly egged him on to do it.

What happened to Brooklyn Sims

Sims was shot to death while working at a Home Depot on August 11 in Pensacola, Fla.

According to reports, Keith’s mother Sheila Agee, 50, worked alongside Sims at the Home Depot and allegedly texted Keith the address of the store on the day of the shooting.

“As long as you don’t shoot me,” Shelia allegedly wrote in a text message exchange with her son released by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

“I said, ‘Hey, you gave me something.’ She said, ‘Not this again,’ and turned around and proceeded to walk off from me. I’ve never been so mad in my life,” Agee said in a court hearing, according to WKRG. “I pulled my firearm from my waistband, and I proceeded to shoot Brooklyn.”

“The murder itself is unbelievable, but to know the mother knew about it and helped coordinate it is incomprehensible,” Sheriff Chip W. Simmons of Escambia County said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Sheila Agee and Keith Agee arrested

Keith was arrested on the day of the shooting.

His mother Sheila was arrested in Washington County, Ala. She was charged with murder for allegedly helping her son plan the crime.

Sentencing

Agee was sentenced to life in prison for the premeditated murder of Sims. He was found not guilty on a charge of aggravated battery related to injuries incurred by two other individuals at the scene.

Keith was impelled to kill Sims because he believed she had given him an STD, but Sims didn’t have an STD per evidence provided by prosecutors after the verdict was read.

“I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter, but we just wanted to give Miss Sims a little bit of dignity,” Assistant State Attorney Bridgette Jensen said in court, according to WKRG CBS.

His mother Sheila is awaiting trial for first degree murder.
