Democrat Eric Adams won the race for New York City mayor, defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. With this victory, Adams becomes the city’s second Black mayor.

Eric Adams Makes History

Adams, a retired NYPD captain, follows the late David Dinkins as the second Black mayor in city history. The Brooklyn native currently serves as borough president. He won a tough Democratic primary after promising to reform the NYPD and address rising crime.

Campaign Focused on Public Safety

Adams built his campaign on public safety. He often said that “public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity.” His message resonated with working‑class Democrats outside Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. That support helped secure his nomination.

His background as a police officer also shielded him from attacks by Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels. Adams often spoke about being beaten by police as a teen. Later, as an officer, he criticized injustices and pushed for change inside the department.

However, he did not support calls from some progressives to defund the police.

Adams Reflects on His Journey

On Election Day, Adams grew emotional as he held a photo of his mother. He spoke about his life and the people he hopes to inspire.

“This is an amazing day,” Adams said. “Every child who was ever told they would never succeed — this is for you. I am you.”
