CLEVELAND — A Cleveland mother survived a sudden cardiac arrest at home after her 15‑year‑old daughter, Mahogany Milton, performed CPR learned through the American Heart Association. The teen’s fast response kept her mother, B’Lon Calloway, alive until paramedics arrived in March 2025.

A Teen’s Quick Action Saves a Life

According to Cleveland19, Calloway came home from work feeling unwell before collapsing moments later. Mahogany said her mother took “one big breath” and then stopped breathing. She noticed her mother turning blue and cold and immediately called 911. Guided by the dispatcher, she began CPR and continued until help arrived.

Mahogany learned CPR from her mother and through the American Heart Association’s STEM Goes Red program in 2023. She said she prayed throughout the ordeal, hoping her mother would survive.

Cleveland Sudden Cardiac Arrest: Critical Condition and Emergency Treatment

Paramedics rushed Calloway to a local hospital, where doctors found a 99% blockage in her left anterior descending artery caused by atherosclerotic heart disease. Intervention Cardiologist Dr. Ryan Christofferson inserted a stent to restore blood flow. Calloway also suffered a heart attack but survived despite long odds.

Doctors said her survival was rare. They credited Mahogany’s CPR with preserving her mother’s heart function during the crucial early minutes.

Recovery and Public Recognition

Calloway spent a week in the hospital as she recovered. She later shared her story with hundreds at the American Heart Association’s Go Red luncheon, where she and Mahogany spoke about their bond and the importance of CPR training.

Mahogany described her mother as her best friend. Calloway said she feels grateful to be alive and called herself “living testimony.”

Atherosclerotic Heart Disease

Doctors said B’Lon Calloway’s cardiac arrest stemmed from atherosclerotic heart disease, a condition that develops when plaque builds up inside the arteries and restricts blood flow. Plaque contains cholesterol, fatty substances, calcium and other materials that harden the artery walls over time. As the artery narrows, the heart receives less oxygen‑rich blood, increasing the risk of a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, atherosclerosis often progresses silently for years until a major blockage triggers a medical emergency. The American Heart Association notes that plaque can partially or completely block an artery or rupture, causing a blood clot that stops blood flow and leads to life‑threatening complications.
